You may not know how to pronounce Bangor, but you’re probably well-aware of a certain famous writer associated with this city in Maine. Maybe you’ve read something of his. Maybe it kept you awake all night. Maybe that alone entices you.
You’ll be further enticed by THE SHINING opportunity at Eastern Maine Medical Center. This Level II trauma hospital is looking fortwo urologists—onegeneralist and one with strong oncology skills—to join six other urologists. They provide care for more than three-quarters of the Bangor Metropolitan area, but you’ll never work with a SKELETON CREW here. There’s no MISERY in splitting call 1:6!
NEEDFUL THINGS are in generous supply at EMMC, with its 411 beds, eight ORs, and two daVincis with another on the way. The facility is currently undergoing extensive renovation, with a new PACU and updates to the ORs.
Waiting for THE DARK HALF of this job? There isn’t one. In addition to a salary of $450K+, you’ll receive a $25K signing bonus, the full benefits of an employed position, relocation, the help of APPs, and the opportunity to teach residents. When does the DOCTOR SLEEP? Pretty much whenever you like, with only a 4-day work week!
Henry David Thoreau, whose aunt lived in Bangor, described the city as “like a star at the edge of the night, still hewing the forests of which it is built.” More than 100 years later, the inspiration from the former logging town drew in Stephen King. Even after his books turned into movies and visitors began pouring in for bus tours of his house and other haunts, King moved freely about the city, unhindered by the easygoing locals. The tours are ongoing, and you wouldn’t want to stay in Bangor long without going on one yourself.
Bangor has an international airport, great schools, low crime, and it was named one of the cleanest cities by the American Lung Association in its annual State of the Air report. It contains an entire 680-acre city forest with 10 miles of hiking, cycling, and cross-country skiing trails. Cascade Park, one of the city’s more manicured green spaces, features a waterfall cascading into a fountain of colored lights. It’s near the hospital, so you can enjoy a quick picnic in its gazebo, cooled by the breeze from the Penobscot river.
The Penobscot Theater Company and the Waterfront Concert Series will keep you entertained with performers from across the country. Acadia National Park is an hour away, and Baxter State Park is only slightly farther.
