Everything's bigger in Texas, or so the saying goes. But in the big metro areas of Texas, the cost of living is high, the traffic is horrible, and the urology market is saturated. This means that genuinely attractive urology jobs are almost nonexistent, even if you have connections.
So think outside the giant box! Urologists who choose mid-sized Texas cities instead end up happier, wealthier, and freer to enjoy the things that make Texas such a perfect place to live and work -- mild winters, no state income tax, and tort reform, to name a few.
The job: Award winning United Regional, a 325-bed, level ll trauma hospital, is looking for a robotically trained urologist to join one other employed urologist—building to a group of three. You'll start with a base of over $400,000 (potential once established is over $530K). With none of the community urologists doing robotics, a strong referral base of primary care physicians, and one of the best new physician marketing plans we've ever seen, you'll have a flourishing practice in no time! You'll work with state-of-the-art equipment in beautiful facilities, including a brand new office space that you can help design. In addition, there's a $60K+ signing bonus, a generous moving allowance, and if you're still in training you can expect a generous monthly stipend once you've signed!
The city: Two hours from Dallas/Fort Worth or Oklahoma City, Wichita Falls is ranked 7th in the nation for the best cost of living. This means you can have a 3000+ sq ft. home near the country club (with its championship golf course) for less than $300K. This means that whether you decide to send your children to the excellent public schools or one of Wichita Falls' outstanding private schools, you won't break the bank. But the low cost of living doesn't mean you're in the middle of nowhere...
With a population of over 105,000 (service area 320K) boosted by Midwestern State University and Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, TX, has more amenities than many larger cities. Restaurants range from the trendy cuisine and craft beers of Pasqual to the family-friendly burgers at Willie's Place. Cultural options include the ballet, the Backstage Theater, and North Texas's premier symphony orchestra. If you love the outdoors, take the family to River Bend Nature Center or travel the 24 miles of bike trails around the city in preparation for the Hotter'N Hell Hundred race. Hunt for quail, deer or javelina, or take your boat out on the lake or on the river. You'll never lack for things to do.
All this and you get to live in a community where family is still important. In Houston or Dallas, you'll work 60+ hours a week and then have an hour commute home. When you work for United Regional in Wichita Falls, you can make an excellent living in a community that really needs your skills, and still make it from work to your kid's little league game in less than 10 minutes.
No big-city traffic. No tumbleweeds. But everything will still be bigger: your paycheck, your quality of life, and your smile. It's the best of Texas, y'all.
