About Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA)
OUR MISSION: To fulfill President Lincoln's promise – "To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan" – by serving and honoring the men and women who are America's Veterans. How would you like to become a part of a team providing compassionate care to Veterans?
VHA physicians, nurses and health care givers provide nearly five million Veterans, and their families, with quality medical care every year. Our personnel practice all medical specialties and provide medical and rehabilitative treatment of all kinds, from acute to long term care. We're especially proud of VHA's preeminent role in educating physicians, nurses and other health care professionals. More than half of the physicians currently practicing in the United States received some part of their training in one of our care facilities.
When you work as a VA health care, administrative, or support professional, the career opportunities are virtually endless. By working for the largest, most technologically advanced integrated health care system in the Nation, you'll have access to a wider range of opportunities and leadership positions at your fingertips. VA's vast network of facil...ities also means more practice settings and specialization opportunities for health care professionals. No matter which VA facility you choose, you'll work within an interdisciplinary care team structure and be challenged to achieve the most positive patient outcomes possible. You'll have the opportunity to practice meaningful, groundbreaking medicine often treating patients with injuries rarely seen in the private sector. And, our vast network of facilities gives you access to some of the most advanced medical technologies in the Nation. And, geography won't even get in your way. When life dictates a move, you can seek employment at any location where there is a vacancy and transfer with no loss of benefits. For health care professionals, only one current, active professional state license is necessary to practice anywhere in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. At the end of the day, VA professionals feel good about their careers, the Veterans they serve, and their ability to balance work and home life. VA offers generous paid time off and a variety of predictable and flexible scheduling opportunities.
When you work for VA, you work for a health care system that leads the Nation in quality care and patient satisfaction. Our patients say so, and so do a number of outside experts. VA also sets the national standard for patient safety initiatives. We are committed to automating workflow, reducing staff fatigue, and implementing evidence-based practice guidelines to positively impact patient safety and treatment outcomes. Veterans' unique and complex health care needs drive many of VA's nationwide patient care initiatives, such as our Mental Health Enhancement Initiative, our new Polytrauma System of Care, and our focus on the rehabilitation of returning Veterans. VA also leads the way in diabetes and HIV/AIDS treatment and research.
Abraham Lincoln created the Department of Veterans Affairs with the most noble of missions: To care for him who shall borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan. Every day, more soldiers leave the battlefield headed for home – men and women who sacrificed their bodies and, in some cases, their minds defending the dignity, honor and safety of those at home. When you work at VA, you will have a comfortable salary, comprehensive benefits and great work/life balance, just like the private sector. But, VA has something that no other health care system does: the opportunity to serve Veterans. As the largest health care system in the U.S., the career opportunities are endless, matched with the fulfillment that comes with caring for these brave men and women. After all, their incredible sacrifices protected our freedoms. So to us, being able to give back to them is an honor and privilege. No matter the professional path you pursue, your contributions here will be essential to improving the health of Veterans across the U.S. Their needs will be your call to action. And their gratitude will remind you that we’re all in this together.
